The AR(t)IBMCP Artist-in-Residence started!
It already started the first edition of AR(t)IBMCP, the Artist-in-Residence at the Biotechnology research center Institute for Plant Molecular and Cellular Biology (IBMCP) at Valencia, Spain.
This year 2022 our awarded artist is Carlos Castellanos, who is already working with researchers at the IBMCP.
The Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) has launched its first international Artists-in-Residence-in Scientific-Laboratories programme, with a maximum budget (for the stay and the artwork creation) of 14,000 euros. The AR(t)IBMCP initiative is promoted by the Vice-Rectorate for Art, Science, Technology and Society, and the IBMCP, in collaboration with the Faculty of Fine Arts and the Centre del Carme Cultura Contemporània (CCCC).
AR(t)IBMCP inaugurates the UPV’s Artists in Residence Programme, whose main objective is «to promote an interdisciplinary exchange between the research community and international artists and, at the same time, to involve the public in these innovative approaches that combine art and science in order to explore new ways of transferring scientific knowledge to society», says the Vice-Rector for Art, Science, Technology and Society, Salomé Cuesta.
The programme is geared toward innovative transdisciplinary projects that explore the role of plant biotechnology in agriculture, and even go beyond the fields of art and science to address issues of ethics and social responsibility.
A CREATIVE REFLECTION ON PLANT BIOTECHNOLOGY
The artist residency at the Institute for Plant Molecular and Cellular Biology (IBMCP) is revolving around concepts derived from the research that is carried out at this international research centre, and from its objectives of improving crops and agriculture through science. It will also provide an educational and experimental platform for the promotion of critical thinking that explores the potential and the implications of plant biotechnology, working at the interface between art, science and technology.
The resident artist has a workspace at the IBMCP and scientific tutorials in situ through collaboration with researchers from different laboratories, with the aim of providing him with inside knowledge about the different research projects taking place there, their objectives, and the scientific methods and experimental approaches applied in them.
EXHIBITION AT THE CCCC
The AR(t)IBMCP residency also includes a commitment by the UPV to disseminate the artistic work thus produced, provided its content is related to the IBMCP’s lines of research. Specifically, the project will be exhibited at the Centre del Carme Cultura Contemporània (CCCC) of the Valencian Government (Generalitat Valenciana) Museum Consortium. In this way, «it will allow both the UPV and the Institute for Plant Molecular and Cellular Biology to explore new, alternative ways to communicate with society about the scientific achievements in its laboratories,» explains the IBMCP’s director, Pablo Vera.
The work format is completely open, in accordance with current contemporary art standards in areas such as Interactive Art, BioArt, Hybrid Art, AI & Life Sciences, Sound Art, Net Art, Digital Communities, Participatory Art/Crowd Art, Artistic Platform Projects and Art Activism, among others.
